Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

The lymphatic system is an important part of the immune and circulatory system. Lymph fluid carries important cells that help fight infections throughout the body. But when this fluid builds up and is unable to naturally dissipate, uncomfortable swelling can occur.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized massage technique aimed at improving lymph flow and aiding tissue drainage. Using the traditional Vodder method, we apply rhythmic strokes to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid towards the cardiovascular system, where it is naturally filtered out.

MLD helps to reduce inflammation, supports internal functions, and enhances overall wellbeing

Speed recovery time and experience relief after surgery

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is celebrated for its holistic approach to healing, with growing acceptance in the medical community due to compelling research. A pivotal study by Dr. Laurie Casas and Dr. Patricia Depoli explored MLD’s impact on post-surgery recovery, encompassing 13 different cosmetic procedures. Patients who received MLD healed significantly faster—within six weeks to three months—compared to 9-18 months for those without MLD, showcasing its profound healing potential.

Here’s how manual lymphatic drainage can benefit individuals undergoing cosmetic surgery:

1. Reduces Swelling and Bruising

  • MLD enhances the natural rhythm of the lymphatic system, accelerating the movement of cells up to 20 times faster. This gentle yet powerful technique helps bruises fade quickly, allowing you to resume your daily life with confidence and ease.

  • MLD redirects lymph fluid to alternative, unaffected pathways, fostering a swift and natural reduction of swelling. This harmonious flow alleviates the slow, uncomfortable buildup of fluids at the surgical site.

2. Alleviates Discomfort and Enhances Healing

  • By gently reducing lymph fluid pressure around nerves, MLD soothes pain and discomfort, lessening the reliance on pain medication. This natural pain management technique promotes a serene and comfortable healing process.

  • By increasing oxygen and nutrient delivery to the surgical site, MLD promotes the formation of healthy new tissue and minimizes the risk of complications.

3. Improves Scar Healing

  • MLD helps prevent the accumulation and solidification of lymph fluid beneath the skin, which can lead to scar tissue and fibrosis. This holistic approach ensures a smooth, uninterrupted healing process, resulting in flawless, natural-looking scars.

4. Personalized Care

  • MLD can be tailored to each client's specific needs and surgical procedure, ensuring that the massage techniques are gentle and appropriate for their recovery stage.

  • At Baum Skin & Body, we can provide personalized lymphatic wellness plans to support your healing and protect your investment.

The holistic benefits of manual lymphatic drainage are increasingly recognized by surgeons, who appreciate its ability to reduce typical post-operative side effects, minimize downtime, and enhance overall well-being.

“The surgical patient, in particular, benefits largely from manual lymphatic drainage,” says cosmetic surgeon Bart Rademaker, M.D. “In these situations, the normal homeostasis is upset through anesthesia or tissue injury, and the normal channels to remove excessive toxins or waste are overwhelmed.

“Effective manual lymphatic drainage definitely improves surgical outcomes and speed of recovery,” he adds

What to Expect

An MLD session generally begins with a consultation between you and your therapist so they understand your specific needs. Your therapist will then leave the room; you’ll undress and lie under the blanket on your back on the massage table. Level of undress is completely up to the client, however, tighter fitting clothing may interfere with the lymphatic treatment. Proper draping is kept at all times during treatment.

The therapist typically asks you to practice diaphragmatic breathing, aka breathe deeply. At the same time, they will gently apply pressure to your abdomen to help activate the lymphatic vessels and stimulate lymph flow. The therapist then moves their hands in a specific pattern, following the natural direction of lymphatic circulation; the pressure applied is lighter than other massage techniques, and there is no oil or lotion typically.

Before any MLD session, we recommend refraining from eating a heavy meal before an hour before your session to ensure no discomfort during the abdominal sequence.

During the session you may feel a bit lightheaded or nauseated, this is typically short-lived.

After the session, you will be given at-home instructions and educational material for maintaining optimal lymph flow.

ALL POST-SURGERY CLIENTS WILL REQUIRE MEDICAL CLEARANCE AND REFERRAL FROM A PHYSICIAN FOR MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE TREATMENT
